Surfer Wading Out In Front Of Tybee Pier

Wheelchair Accessibility

Accessibility can be a big concern when looking for the right vacation spot. Here are some ways Tybee Island tries to ensure that everyone can fully enjoy the experience regardless of mobility.

Beach Access

Tybee Island has installed mobility mats, known as mobi-mats, at three of the major dune crossover points to provide a stable hard-surface for wheelchairs. These are located at North Beach Mid-Lot Cross-over, Second Avenue Cross-over, and Tybrisa Street Cross-over.

For those who would like to get up close to the water or even get in the water, Tybee offers beach wheelchairs that can roll easily in the sand and in the water. They are designed with wide, sturdy tires to keep the chairs from sinking into the sand. These are completely free and are available at the lifeguard station near the Pier and Pavilion or the Code Enforcement office at 1509 Strand Avenue. https://cityoftybee.org/463/Beach-Wheelchairs

The beach wheelchairs are on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend calling ahead to make sure there is one available.  A valid photo ID is needed, and users are asked to fill out a survey to help Tybee keep improving its accessibility options.

Tybee Island is always working to improve accessibility in thoughtful, tangible ways. While some locations, due to the time they were built, like the Tybee Island Light House and Tybee Museum, are not fully handicap accessible, many areas at Fort Pulaski and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.
