Surfer Wading Out In Front Of Tybee Pier

Discovery the Magic of Bioluminescence

If you’re lucky, warm summer nights may bring a magical surprise. Bioluminescence is the process which happens when tiny marine organisms are disturbed and produce natural light, causing the water to glow.

While this isn’t a daily occurrence on Tybee, there are ways to increase your chances of seeing this phenomenon. The best time to view this is when the water is at its warmest between late summer and early fall. Try to visit the beach during a new moon when the sky is darkest. (The New Moon on Tybee is July 24th, 2025!) Avoid being too close to town and find a calm stretch of beach where the waves aren’t as rough. The calmer water allows the organisms to group up, creating a more prominent glow.

If you’re lucky enough to see this in person, it feels like something out of a fairy tale. When the waves lap at the shore, you will see blueish-green specks float through the water. Every splash or flutter of your feet will send tiny glowing orbs swirling around you. You may even see your footprints glow as you walk along the water's edge. Have you experienced this on Tybee?

Yes, it is safe. The bioluminescence is caused by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates, which are harmless to humans. You can safely enter and paddle through the glowing water.
